CHAIRPERSON’S COMMENTS

Well, once again the time has come for the beginning of another Siouxland section operating year¾ the 50th year of Siouxland Section’s existence. I am hoping this will be one of the best years to come. As you can see by the schedule on the next page we will have an interesting year filled with tours and speaking activities. We have tried to make sure the meetings are held throughout the section, some in Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown. Hopefully all can attend at least one of the scheduled meetings this year. Particular information on each meeting will be publicized about three months in advance in each newsletter.

As you can also see from our budget on the next page, we will be sending some key personnel to meetings this year so they can use these experiences to help in the years to come. Student branch allocations will be determined by the following rule: The Siouxland allocate a maximum of $500.00 per student branch but the total for both branches will not exceed $600.00.

This years goals are:
1. Plan and confirm each meeting activity at least 3 months in advance.
2. Entice, through interesting meeting activities and articles in the Siouxland Signal more people to attend and get involved in the Siouxland Section.
3. Professionally, reliably and successfully manage the Siouxland Section through the 1996-1997 operating year.

We are only as good as our membership. With that statement I know we are one of the best sections in the region. I am very much looking forward to meeting you all at the scheduled meetings this year and hope you will take advantage of the interesting activities planned. I as well as the executive committee would be very happy to hear from you anytime. We want to know your questions and concerns as they come up.
¾ Jayme Huber,
Section Chairperson

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

SUPPORT IEEE CANDIDATE
FOR PRESIDENT ELECT: BORDOGNA

Dear Colleague:

Thank you for being a good friend and a supporter in my efforts to make the IEEE more responsive to member needs. In a few weeks it will be time to voice our opinions and select a 1997 President Elect. This is a very important election. The IEEE is undergoing very intensive scrutiny and is in the process of reorganizing itself to provide better and more services to our members and to be more efficient in doing so. The IEEE must be on a sound organizational and financial footing as we move into the 21st Century.

There are two (2) names on this ballot for 1997 President Elect and I am privileged to know both individuals. One, Joseph Bordogna, is clearly a stronger candidate, as you can see by his statement of candidacy on the web at http://www.erols.com/bordogna, and I am certain that he will be an excellent President.

Joe and I have become friends over the past few years and I feel that his thoughts on the future of the IEEE and on what needs to be done to move the IEEE forward are indicative of the directions in which we need to go.

I urge you to give your vote to Joseph Bordogna so that he can be the 1997 President Elect!

Joel Snyder,
IEEE-USA Chair

IEEE-USA JOB LISTING SERVICE MARKS SECOND ANNIVERSARY WITH INVITATION TO HIGH-TECH CEOs

IEEE-USA ushered in the third year of its popular National Job Listing Service by issuing a challenge and invitation to 1,600 CEOs of high-technology firms. In a July 31 letter to the chief executives, IEEE-USA Chair Joel B. Snyder extolled IEEE-USA's Internet-based employment service as the ideal vehicle for companies experiencing difficulty finding qualified technical talent in today's tighter engineering labor market.

The National Job Listing Service ¾ which offers job-seekers Web, Gopher and e-mail versions of regional listings of job openings ¾ has experienced explosive growth in its first two years of existence. During the first half of 1996, nearly 75,000 visitors logged onto the free member service, which has posted several thousand job openings since it began.

Meanwhile, as widely reported during the recent employment-based immigration debate, some companies have complained publicly that they have been unable to find enough qualified electrotechnologists in the United States. A few large high-tech corporations even claimed they had 1,000 or more unfilled technical positions.

In his letter, Snyder challenged CEOs to make use of IEEE-USA's Job Listing Service as "an inexpensive, effective way to advertise your openings to the Institute's members." He added: "We don't know a better way to uncover engineering talent than to list openings with an organization that has the largest membership of electrotechnology professionals in the United States. We are committed to be THE electronic location for electrical, electronics and computer professionals to begin their job searches."

Snyder's claims for the National Job Listing Service were supported recently by a national recruiters' newsletter. According to the July 30 ELECTRONIC RECRUITING NEWS: "If you're trying to recruit technical professionals, we suggest going straight to the source. The IEEE has one of the most heavily trafficked employment Websites on the ’net.

The Web URL for the IEEE-USA National Job Listing Service is www.ieee.org/jobs.html. For more information on the service, or to post job openings, contact IEEE-USA's Bill Anderson at 202-785-0017, ext. 330, or w.anderson@ieee.org.
